These are two of the Aztec gods I've designed for my Godlings comic. These two images were created for a Materials and Techniques class, and since there were so many layers, I decided to show the progress. First inks on watercolor paper, with uneven taped-off borders. Then various resists were added: Elmer's glue, white crayon, white acrylic paint, rubber cement. Then the watercolor was laid down. The object was to create flat, decorative shapes. I particularly liked the way white acrylic paint leaves only faint traces under the color, a technique I later used again with different pieces. Lastly, the images were glazed with aging varnish and then crackling varnish, giving the whole surface an aged look. Black shoe polish was rubbed into the cracks left by the crackling varnish to emphasize them. And for the curious, or those not following my webcomic, the one on the right is Tezcatlipoca. The one on the right is Huitzilopochtli. |
